Stairs themselves look "alright."

It's the built-in railings that gave him fits. I think he should have cut the carpet one time parallel with the steps and spliced them instead of cutting 3 times perpendicular and trying to patch it all together some kind of hokey-ass way. It looks like a home DIY'r did it. But then again I'm not an installer. You couldn't see a seam on the old carpet.

Can the installers work around this?

Holy shit... no, I don't think you can splice that in. Might be better with some adhesive under it and an iron to smooth it out.
