not sure if we have any “wood” experts on here but what makes this wood so shiny and sleek? Laminate?

Yep, and I love it. There's a knife guy that's offered one of his knives (and they are ridiculously good) to the closest guess on July 11 (runngun day) I'm in for 103, hopefully it'll hit that.

Last year wasn't bad at all, a few years ago we were in the triple digits over and over, even hit 115 in Tulsa 118 a few other places IIRC.

It's the coating - probably a high-gloss polymer. Remington used something similar and it's hard and brittle. Easier to scrape it off than anything else. It's kind of like clear coat on a car - nice until it starts going south, then it looks like hell.

Most of the ones I've refinished I'll go back with a low gloss oil-based finish. It't not as hard on the surface, but it actually gets down into the wood.
