It's the coating - probably a high-gloss polymer. Remington used something similar and it's hard and brittle. Easier to scrape it off than anything else. It's kind of like clear coat on a car - nice until it starts going south, then it looks like hell.

Most of the ones I've refinished I'll go back with a low gloss oil-based finish. It't not as hard on the surface, but it actually gets down into the wood.
Cool. What should I get at Home Depot to replicate that high or even a low gloss finish? I’m guessing the process is, you sand it down to the grain/unfinished then stain it and then add the gloss finish?
