Regardless of year of manufacture, defacing the serial number on a firearm is considered a crime.
While intent plays a part of the change, a hard charging ATF agent might be an asshole and go after you for it.

I don't think it's gonna be a problem for you though. I wouldn't worry about it. They would have a hard time making that stick.

And it might have the whole S/N somewhere else on the rifle ( but I don't think they do...) but I'd do your dead level best on determining the actual S/N on that rifle with matching numbers with other parts, that you think will match.... I don't think the ATF cares about a 75 year old bolt action gun.
