Plenty of rugged compact scopes, but the OP's price range rules out the ones I was gonna recommend. A fixed 3x on an SBR? A lot of optic for not much gun.

Keep your RDS in a good mount that will retain its zero when removed/re-installed. Then buy a separate scope for hunting. I've used an unmagnified RDS for hog hunting and like it very much.

I store my loaded PMags with the dust covers on. I've also stored loaded PMags without the dust covers and never had issues.

My brother is a shooter and shoots with me regularly, also helps out with classes from time-to-time. Just trying to expand his horizons and improve his capabilities. I'm working with him right now on getting his Triple Nickel.
