As I've admitted before, I know nothing about AKs, so, real talk, what do the dummy rounds in the drum do? And can you not use something like this:

So the dummy rounds keep the spring under tension and help it feed. The last dummy round, the 3rd in the stack has a tab on it that interacts with the inside of the drum and keeps the wheel (under flat spring tension) from unwinding.

If you remove your starter belt and let the wheel go that bitch will unwind tension, I’m not sure how man “full rotations” it is to reset tension if the wheel goes spinning on you, but technically you could wind it back up to a point and reinsert your belt into the correct wing on the wheel and let it feed back up the neck of the drum and lock tension in place.

if You’re missing a dummy round completely and the ring that links the dummy rounds together you can load 76 rounds but it won’t feed the last round because tension won’t allow it.

If you’re missing the first dummy round like I am, but the ring is in place like mine is, it will probably function and feed fine, but it has lost its value and is not considered *excellent condition* not worth 150.00 more like 120.00 seeing as machinist on AK files have fabricated replacement dummy rounds and charge 60.00 for them. (Not invested 60.00 into a 150.00 *excellent* drum)

you can’t really use an empty casing, nor a snap cap, etc to replace because 1. You can’t get it inside the sealed ring, it’s not like MG links that snap it’s a perfect circle ring, and 2 thryre machined differently in the rear so that the bolt travels over the dummy round when all ammo is expended and doesn’t try to feed the dummy round into the chamber or smash the bolt open like a BHO

Thanks. That explains a lot.

I don't have access to a lathe or mill anymore (or the steady hands to run it since the stroke) but it would seem you could machine an solid metal snap cap to the right shape for less than $60 ( o_O ). Not sure about getting it in the ring though since I haven't ever seen one. Any machinists here want to take a shot? (Just Grunk trying to volunteer somebody else's time & labor again. What an asshole!)
