I've often wondered about this too.... Mostly because I have lowers that were never built (at all) from back when 4473's only said "rifle" or "handgun"... I have not used those lowers for AR pistol builds for that reason. I've actually bought new lowers to be transferred as "receivers" or...

I'm in the same boat. Before I even consider a new pistol, I look for aftermarket threaded barrels. Rifles are much the same.
