    Better off with a good wire brush cleaning and a durable coating. Maybe primer too. I like @Grunk's suggestion of bed liner, if you can get a small quantity. Maybe a local shop would spray it cheap when they do a truck?

    Yes, just buy them... that's $15 worth of wood. Unfortunately. Freaking material is ridiculous right now. I'm about to start cutting down the trees in my backyard. Then dry them for a year.

    Fun fact about pencils.... graphite flakes off when you write. Graphite flakes short out electrical connections. Pencils suck in zero gravity.
