Enjoying this story as it unfolds.

#4 was what my LGS pulled off the shelf when I bought my shotty.
I did no analysis on the right load, but it must be right in the minds of those who can choose from anything.

Mostly the number of pellets - 20-27 of 0.24 caliber @ about 1100-1350 fps.

00 is 9 of 0.33 cal @ about the same velocity.

Inside the house I think the #4 buck has the advantage. Outside, longer distances, 00 wins.

True, redmond and I think the police use #4, so you can't go wrong with cop stuff. ANd it's not that cops use the best stuff, it's just that there's a parallel for SD. Cops use .40 Glocks, I'd use a .40 Glock, etc. I even drive a Crown Vic!

Many years ago I use to reload 12 gauge shotgun shells with number 4 buckshot for a deputy sheriff.
He used them for practice in the riot gun.

Correct - that is for 12 ga

20 ga #4 buck contains 15-18 pellets
20 ga 00 buck contains about 6-8 pellets

It's like standing in front of a firing squad with 27 guys with 22 long rifles shooting at your heart at 1 time.
Not a good situation.

The load my friend got for me was:
20 gauge Federal Game-Shok Hi-Brass Lead - 2 3/4" - 1 oz shot - 4 shot - 70mm - muzzle velocity 1220 FPS
I believe he said it was bird shot (better for inside the house); anybody know for sure? What's the difference between buckshot and birdshot anyway? Is there a #4 buckshot, and a #4 birdshot, or don't birdshots have numbers???
