I used rust converting spray then black enamel. Used 2 rods to stabilize a field hydrand.

Better off with a good wire brush cleaning and a durable coating. Maybe primer too. I like @Grunk's suggestion of bed liner, if you can get a small quantity.

Maybe a local shop would spray it cheap when they do a truck?

Or muraic acid; let it get rusty as fuck; then clear coat.
