.22lr Pistol Host

Ok, Scott hates Ruger MK's for hosts and I respect his opinion. I'm not really too keen on a 1911 for a .22 pistol, I really want a gun that was designed from the ground up to be a 22lr.

The first option is the new Smith and Wesson Victory. Has anyone heard anything about these yet?

A Sig Trailside would be a nice option, but I think it'd be pretty loud too considering the "open" slide style the pistol has.

Other options? I'm not against a 1911, if it's dead reliable.

Here is my list of requirements for a 22 pistol.

For what it's worth, I've had many more ammo related issues with .22 pistols than the pistols themselves. Except for that Walther P22. That thing was trash.

I've heard they are hit or miss- the one I had was a solid miss.

Yeah, that's why I won't take a free brick of anything made by Remington. I'll be sticking with CCI, Federal, or maybe Winchester stuff. I have a pile of all three.

I have the m&p22 compact and it eats everything I throw through it.

I had a 1911-22 but it just wasn't reliable when running suppressed.

Oh- and I'm a MKII junkie. My 22/45 Lite has been great. Only complaint is that the front sight screw works loose sometimes- and I've put locktite on it.

One thing about shooting suppressed rimfire- it's a seriously dirty operation. After a few hundred rounds, that pistol looks like it's shot 3,000 non-suppressed.

I love them too, I particularly like the standard version and not the 22/45 frame. I'm tempted to get one and cut the barrel to 4ish inches to keep hv ammo subsonic. I trust their reliability 100%.

I prefer the MK II frame also. I talked to Dobbs about threading one for me... yeah, apparently they're a huge pain in the ass to thread. The thread job and moving the front sight backward was going to cost more than I paid for the factory threaded 22/45. So I made myself get used to the 22/45 grip angle.

And a note on ammo- I'm not sure what HV (high velocity?) ammo you were referring to, but every single kind of bulk packed ammo I've shot through the pistol is subsonic. I've even stacked a magazine Federal bulk pack staggered with CCI subsonics and the people at the range (and me, obviously) couldn't tell a difference between the shots. I save my subsonics for the rifles. Pistols don't matter at all, at least in my experience.

only issue I ever had with my 22/45 lite was hollow points.Also replaced the mag release lever with an O ring type part to help drop the mag out. Had to pull mags out with factory part.

Not a gun part guy so thats the best I could explain it.

I choose the m&p22 and it has been super reliable with all the ammo I've fed it even really low velocity stuff. The main reason I went with it was that I use mine quite frequently with new shooters and I like that it has the feel and controls of many popular sticker fired guns. I've been very impressed with the reliability. You are welcome to try it with my Sparrow anytime

My 22/45 has ran perfect and is plenty quiet for backyard, subdivision shooting. My SR22 has maybe a 2-4% failure rate when suppressed. I don't have much experience with anything else.

I guess the 22/45 might not be the best host but the bullet hitting the target is the loudest thing about shooting it.

I have the 22/45 lite and the SR22. The SR is my favorite. I've never had a 1911-22, though I plan to at some point. I also found it to be wise to avoid the Walther and sig mosquito, as they both sub out the manufacturing of those models. I've also never owned an m&p 22, but every time this subject comes up they are heavily favored.

I really can't say that my 22/45 is quieter than SR. Actually, if I had to put money on it, I'd say it's actually a tad louder. Maybe one louder. Unless of course you throw some CCI quiet in there and hold the bolt closed. Then it's the quietest thing I've ever shot, BB guns included.

I've never shot them side by side, so I'm not sure. They are both quiet enough, definitely.

I bought the threaded barrel SR and that's what finally prompted me to get off my ass and get a can. Then after I got my can I went and bought the 22/45 under the assumption that it was somehow going to be a better host, but for me, it's just not. Not even sure if I'll keep it.

Never shot one but I plan on going the m&p route. Mainly because I carry a 9c and feel that it would be a good training tool. Plus I have heard good reviews on it.

Not necessarily to answer the question, but the SR22 and options like the MP 22 are great tools for teaching kids and new shooters. They are an easier transition to centerfire than the mark series.
