We decided to take a fishing trip to the reservoir today. I bought 2 doz minnows and we had enough artificial bait to get some much needed time at the lake. Ended up staying prolly 3 hrs fishing along the bank of the lake and did pretty good. We each caught a bass and crappie a piece. He cleaned his first fish and we ate the dinner we caught today with some rice and beans. I was informed that bass taste better than crappie too btw. Good times today I hope you all get a chance to do some fishing at the lake this year with you're kids.
What reservoir you fishing?

For any of you that dont know, I like to ride jetskis and crap. They are fun to work on and fun to ride, plus I live right by the lake. I currently have a 99 SuperJet and a 96 WaveRunner. But I am always scanning craigslist for deals. I found this gem on CL for $300 not running but "Only needing a battery and plugs". I showed up with a battery and fresh plugs and it didnt turn over so I offered $50. SOLD

I got it home and pulled the battery, tank and flywheel cover assuming the bendix was seized, being that I could hear the starter turning it, but not engaging the flywheel. Sure enough, its rusted closed. Ordered a bendix for $17.95 and some plugs for under $5.

A few days go by and my bendix showed up so I decided to start tinkering again. I stripped the stickers off and degreased the dirt filled grime around them, pulled the motor out only to find the block is full of oil and grime and crap.

So tonight/tomorrow my next steps are to:
1. Fill the block with premixed gas and manually turn it for a few mins
2. Drain the block
3. Pull the crank case and inspect the crank, bearings, seals, and wrist pins.
4. Clean the rest of the reeds and surrounding
5. Order what needs replacing
6. Buy a compression tester. Been needing one for a hot minute.

Should be a battery ($85) and carb rebuild kit ($35). Im hoping to have it up and running for around $250 or less, BUT that could go drastically up if I need a crank and or top end. A full motor gasket kit is only $65 which is looking likely at this point, and bearing seals ($15) are more than likely going to be a must. Top end kit is $200, hoping to not need pistons and or rings. Either way. I'll update as I make progress. Oh and I plan to paint it lol. That green is fugly.

GOAL: Get out on the lake and have some fun!

Looking at that engine, gave me syphilis. I'm going to the doctor tomorrow.
It'll be alright lmao. Just needs a good cleaning and maybe a crank, seals, bearings and a few gaskets. Hell I had a couple other 80's two strokes that looked equally as terrible (on the outside) that ran just fine.

Ok so I filled up the block with premix last night and cycled the engine manually for about 5 minutes, drained it, did it again, and again. The first time the gas came out like dirty lake water. It was pretty bad. The next two times were just as clean as when the fuel went in. It was raining and dark so I couldnt listen to the crank or get a good look inside, so I will do those tonight. But overall it felt smooth and other than needing a few gaskets, I am not 100% what all I will need to get it running half decent. Should know more tonight.

Anyone else here work on any small engine stuff? A lot of this is new to me.

I tinker with just about anything that has wheels or an engine/motor.

I often times fish heavily pressured places. Of course I love to use power lures like crankbaits to chatterbaits. But most of the time they don't cut it. I try to finesse to but it seems like the fish see it to much. I'm just curious what's a favorite setup for a heavily pressured place that you fish? Thanks in advance! Just wanna see others to compare!

I haven't fished in a few years but when I did I liked to use live bait in those areas.

Sometimes a top water lure or popper works. I like the small floating frogs. Cast them close to the bank like they jumped in and work em like they are swimming. I also have a 7 weight fly rod and will set up with a bumble bee popper. You can work the popper easy or hard.

It also helps to fish on off days like during the week when few people are out. If all else fails, live crickets or grasshoppers for pan fish will fair better than worms and minnows for bass. Fishing live bait is more difficult because it is tougher to find the fish.

Trolling is okay as long as you have the time and set up. My grandfather would always take us out at dusk and dawn trolling on lake Lanier. A floating but diving lure is best. We would have two rods set up with different lure types at different diving characteristics. The nice thing about floating lures is that you can slow to a stop and cast with other rod/bait setups without worrying about your trolling rigs sinking and getting hung up.

Hope this helps.

Bass are smart and they will stop striking the same style lures in high pressure areas. It seems that most people like the crankbaits and the chatterbaits(me included) which work well, but in high pressure areas lose their appeal to the bass over time. I like to keep an assortment of colors, sizes and shapes. Pressured bass are more likely to strike a smaller lure in my experience too. I like to use a multi jointed swim bait in high pressure areas, something that looks more like the bass' natural food source.

Want to take the kids fishing at a stocked pond to keep them interested in fishing. All of the places around here that I normally go fishing are high pressure areas and they don't have the technique or patience to catch anything. I can reel in fish all day but they don't catch anything. I want to take them somewhere where they will catch a bunch of fish and have a good time to keep them interested in fishing. Whenever we go fishing now they normally end up putting their fishing poles down and go to the playground after about 45 minutes to an hour of not catching anything. Looking for a stocked pay to fish place around the Cherokee area or within a reasonable distance from Cherokee.
