I was recently in that position and decided to invest in a Friends startup It might pay off big time but if it doesn't it will at least be an interesting ride :)

I've made that pitch to a friend who has a start up, but they weren't looking for any investors yet. :(

No, but seriously though, I've been talking to my grandpa about a loan to start my own full service landscaping business. I'd need a lot more than $50k though. A spray truck alone is about $80k brand new, plus all of the other equipment and trailers and stuff. I have enough contacts that I could get a pretty good customer base fairly quickly and several people willing to work.

I can't think of a faster way to lose a friend. Is he married? Maybe you could bang his wife instead. It'd be cheaper.

Anyone have a cool $1.5 mil? And want to start a contracting firm? I've got a lead on a well maintained 530e and know the homies necessary to get moving.

Be aware that creating customers from contacts made while at your current employer could open you up to lawsuits.

Not a real risk in GA unless you have an air tight contract and a former employer with deep pockets. Non compete agreements and such are virtually unenforceable.

Paying down a house is dumb. Interest on homes is far less what you'll make in almost any fund. Definitely less than the interest you'll make if you do a little research and invest it in a few decent stocks for the remaining years you owe on the house.
