Yeah, good advice but be aware of the local laws. Carrying that fixed blade knife in most of Europe will get you in deep shit. The pen, wad of cash, situational awareness and some martial arts training is about the best you can do in western europe anyway.

Yeah pepper spray will get you in trouble in some of them as well.
