If you've spent any time on gun forums you've encountered quite a few "how man mags" threads, and I'm going to shoot the typical response in the face.

The consensus is 10 magazines per rifle/firearm..whatever. If this is based on magazine attrition, how many mags will be worn out, broken, lost..whatever, why does it matter how many rifles you own? How many rifles are you shooting at once? With more rifles, that typically means that you spend at least a bit less time shooting some, and more time shooting others. If you own just a handful of guns, those might get a lot of use.

That said, I'm fine with having 3-4 magazines for some boutiquey rifles that see little use, 3-4x more than the 10/per gun recommendation that typically floats around for guns like my AR's.

Do any of y'all really only have 10 magazines for your "primary" shtf/range gun? Do you really have 10 magazines for your Swiss K-31? Not this cat.

I've always read the 10 mags for your primary gun was the base starting point. The people I've read say buy 10 mags, then buy other stuff like training, vests, ammo before you start stacking mags back, that after 10 mags your money is better spent in other places before you go crazy with the mag prep.

I feel pretty similarly honestly. I only have 3 mags for my AR9 that I would NEVER pick up to defend myself should the need arise, and would never leave the house with it for a bug out sitchamacation. Regular AR mags and pistol mags are a different story since those are my go to's. I rock all 9mm glocks though so my 43 is also an oddball with only 3 mags, since I will never ever have more than 3 on me at one time, if even that many since I'd rather just rock a 26/19/17. At that much volume and weight the 43 is not the right choice for me imo.

I'd throw this out there too- AR mags are cheap, and rapidly produced. The likelihood of getting one that doesn't feed reliably is a bit higher than some other mags, in my opinion.

I've only got five or six mags for the M1A. But I also don't have enough .308 ammo to load them all.

AR mags... yeah, well, got a few. And enough ammo to load them twice.

I'm of the mindset of 7 mags per rifle.

7 is the standard combat load. 1 in rifle and 6 on body.

I'm of this mindset because God forbid I have to actually arm myself and friends who failed to prepare for worst case scenario.

This is what I've always thought too. I'm now up to 15 for my AR so now I'm focusing on glock mags for a little bit, but I'm still buying AR mags when I see them for a good price.

I only have (3) three full capacity mags for the Vp9...gasp! I just can't bring myself to buy any more for $45 a piece.

I just added (20) 30 round PMAGS and intend to buy about 20 per month for the next few months. Luckily I'm and FFL and can get at wholesale pricing. If Killary gets elected, there will be a run on guns and ammo, the likes you have never seen. Probably going to add a few extra AR's while I'm at it. None of them will go bad in the safe!

Depends on the gun.
For handguns, at least 3 and if it's used often at least 20. I have 22 18rd mags for my USP Expert 9mm.

Rifles, well, quite a bit more than 10 each.
One AK47 has 84 loaded mags, and one AK74 has 116 loaded mags. Both in the case ready to go. Heavy package, but I'd rather shoot when I'm planning on shooting and not spend time reloading mags.
Of course with AKs I think at least 1 tin worth of ammo loaded in mags per rifle is good. Why not?

That's essentially what I said in my original post.

Not really...you mentioned ARs...for which you can't have too many loaded mags because you're likely to have a failure prior to shooting all the ammo HAHA!

That's honestly part of the reason I didn't buy a VP9. I really like them but I like being able to buy cheap glock mags and even cheaper Magpul mags.

But a VP9 is still on my want list.

I'll admit it. My mag game is weak. I might have 15 ar mags. The one that really hurts is my favorite rifle, my sig 551 SBR. I have 7 or 8 mags for it. Now I am wishing I bought more when they were only 42 bucks a pop. Sig has quit importing stuff from europe. Now there is only one company who imports sig stuff, and they want 65 a mag :cry::cry:

Ive got 3-5 mags for each combat (non 22lr) capable pistol ive got.

I went through that phase, and that's why I bought my g34, 19, and 22 but I eventually sold them all off.

I love my glocks. But I also get them cheap, I live 4 miles from the factory, and I shoot them well.

If cost wasn't an issue though I'd only shoot 1911s.

On the pistol mags I do have 5 for each fullsize pistol could use more though. Primary rifles I have 5 for each and will try to double that by November. I need a couple more colt mags for the AR9 that should be finished at the end of the month when parts arrive.

I have 10 or more mags for everything but 1. Last I checked, for my M4's I have about 50.

SAI SOCOM-16: 20

SIG 556xi Russian (takes AK mags): 32

Handguns very from 12-20, depending on the platform.

The lone exception is my Beretta 76 .22 target pistol. I've got 3.5 mags for it. 1 came with the gun, the other 2.5 were a PITA to find and acquire. I would like to find a few more mags for it.
