So I was planning on buying a Garand....but me being the weird guy that I am can't shake wanting a big bore lever gun....something Marlin in either .444, .45-70, or .450 Marlin.

Talk some sense into me and keep me from buying a gun that is only marginally useful.....but oh so fun

Buy what you want.

You were a garand guy when I first met you. Are you about to close the circle and go another lap?

I love the Garands because of the heritage and history.

And the ping. Can't forget the ping.

Big bore lever gun - my shoulder just called me and said "no".

Raid the baby's college fund and get both!

I had the 444p Outfitter, and it was meh. Crude sights, clunky action, so so accuracy. I'd go winchester if I were looking for one again...but I'm not. My affair with big bore levers is over. I'll take a decent .27-30 caliber for the same job.

If you're not out on the ranch, dragging the thing out in a scabbard to ride fences every day, they have limited potential. They aren't a lot of fun for target shooting imo. If you're shooting for groups you'll be frustrated, and if you're plinking you'll be sore and poor. It's about as much fun to take out for recreation as a hammer. There's just a better option for every role they fill.

I shot a friends 450 marlin, and it was quite fun. Very hard hitting round with decent recoil.

That being said, I would probably get a 44mag lever gun, and run 44 specials most often and suppress it.

I understand the want for a garand too. Its an iconic american service rifle.

I also realize that this post probably hasnt helped you at all in making a decision lol

Garand for sure. .45-70 is cool and all but I've heard a bunch of folks say they don't shoot them much after first get them for the reasons laufen said.

Get the M1, it will go up in value, you all ready have some ammo for it, and if there is another ammo shortage, there will always be 30-06 ammo around, unlike most of the other calibers.
