School me on Glocks, i think I might give the Austrians one chance to win me over.

My first two pistols were plastic framed and the first 9mm I ever shot was a Glock but it wasn't until I impulsively bought a 1911 many years later that I actually started enjoying shooting pistols. Since then I have had many 1911's and some other metal frame pistols that i have enjoyed much but due to the continues high praising of the Plastic fans I have decided to give this Glock thing one more chance but the problem is that I know very little about them and all these numbers and generations confuse me. Im pretty sure I want to go full size in 9mm, 45cal or maybe even a 10mm, so I think that means 17,19,20 or 21 (what happened to 18?)

What is the difference between the generations is gen 4 always better than 3?
What Glock version and generation would you guys recommend I start with and why?

In my opinion the Glock 19 is the best all around size. It is a midsize 9mm that gives you a full grip and holds 15 in the mag but is still small enough to conceal easily.
You are mainly going to find gen 3 and gen 4. The gen 4 has a more aggressive grip texture and has replaceable back straps. I prefer the Gen 3 because I don't need the different back straps and the gen 4 texture is too rough for me when I carry IWB.

The size above the Glock 19 is the Glock 17 which is a duty size gun and is the same size as what you see most cops carrying but is more difficult to conceal.

To pick I would go handle each size and generation to see what feels best in the hand.

The Glock 18 is the full auto one that we can't own.

Go with the 17 if you want a 9mm. The 19 is ok if you have Trump sized hands though.

Do the 20 and 21 compare in size with the 19 or 17?

so I guess as a 1911 fanboy i should go with Slim Frame or Gen 4, does that also apply to the 17,19 and 21?

SF actually stands for 'short frame'. Short frame models have a reduced reach from the web of your thumb to the trigger.

are there numbers in 45 and 10mm that would compare to the 19?

This will help a little.

What do you plan on the main job of the gun being (carry, range, hunting, etc....)?
The main job of the gun is to convince me that the Glock is worth owning and using for Carry and Range.
