I had some time to think and started coming up with doing a DMR build. I want to keep it in the AR15 platform and a 18" or 20" barrel. There are a few options out there now for AR fans. I think I'm leaning towards a 6.5 Grendel for mine so tell me what your thoughts are.

The more I read the more I like the 6.5G Looks like the rifle gas system will better fit my wants. A 6.5G 18" barrel and heavier rifle buffer complete 6.5G BCG dedicated 6.5G mags or followers to use in 20 rd pmags that will hold 15 6.5G rds of 123gr or 129gr and not sure about the adjustable gas block or low pro yet since it will be used suppressed. Ammo is looking pretty good to at under .30 rd for steel cased plinking ammo.

I just can't bring myself to stock another caliber projectile, but if the steel case ammo works well it would be nice to get that performance out of the an-15 for a reasonable price. The ar-10 is just way to cumbersome for only a .308 case family performance. Keep us posted please. Oh and I will pay you range fee in Waverly Hall if you let me shoot it.

I'll try to stay in a budget friendly build as much as possible with it. This will be a good build almost looks to good to be true with over 700 ft/lb at 500yds. I'll bring it down there to test my ability at 400yds and you can definitely shoot it.

Keeping it on a budget build I think is gonna require putting one together I've yet to find and upper complete under $400-$450 which is about where I think I can put it together for. The biggest thing is finding the 18" .750 barrel threaded 5/8 under $250. I'll keep looking though.

If you plan on building one make sure you get a Type 1 bolt for a Type 1 barrel which is 7.62x39 compatible bolt and .124 head spacing or if you prefer Type 2 bolt for a Type 2 barrel .135 head spacing the SAAMI spec for the 6.5G. Don't mix these together get one or the other.

I couldn't stay in budget with 18" so I had to go with a 16" barrel. It's set up with carbine gas and I orderd the bolt to go with it. Went with Type I .125 headspace bolt like the 7.62x39. I think I'll get a spare extractor for it if I can find one. That seems to be a part that fails on this bolt based on what I've read. However it eats up some steel ammo and that will be the primary use for this barrel. Got ammo on the way and thebupper is already here. I need a carbine gas tube and gas block to put it all together then a freefloat handguard and it's off to the range.

I looked long and hard at building a 6.5 but it didn't make sense for me given that I already have a 6.8 and that I shoot/hunt at distances less than 200 yards.

Ballistics show that the 6.5 really shines at longer ranges especially with an 18"+ barrel. Doublestar Corp had some of these on sale six months ago but I can't find them now.

Since I didn't take the plunge, I'm going to live vicariously through this thread. Sub'd to see how it turns out.

Sounds good. I am jumping into a 7.62 x 39 build and thanks for the info about matching up the BCG. I bought the upper complete minus BCG for $199 as I will not have time to build. I needed a dedicated lower for my AR57 upper and now will need one for this. I am shopping for build parts as well as complete.
