The maker says it's a semi rare type of hardwood from Thailand formerly Siam.

He sells a lot of his grips on E-Bay, mostly one of a kind grain patterns. I'll e- mail him and see if he has a formal name for it.

That would have been my first guess, but there are many types of wood which are grouped under that name.
