The US cavalry had revolvers chambered in 2 different .45 caliber rounds; the shorter .45 Schofield (in the S&W Schofield revolver) and the longer .45 Colt (in the Colt SAA). Hence the nickname .45 Long Colt.

The .45 Schofield would chamber and work in the Colt SAA, but the longer .45 Colt wouldn't chamber in the S&W Schofield. This led to the US Army dropping the S&W Schofield.

I used to shoot a lot of Cowboy Action and still have all my guns and kit. I'll get back into it one of these days. I have 8 firearms in .45 Colt and reload for them.

Above are my competition guns. 2 Colt SAA's in .45 Colt, a Rossi M92 .45 Colt, and a Winchester 1897 takedown 12ga that was made in 1903. One of the Colts has real ivory on it now, need to upgrade the other to match.

Hate to hijack the thread again, but isn't that an 1897 Winchester shotgun. Or maybe the rarer 1893? I assume it's an 1897 since it was made in 1903. I find the antiques fascinating and am really curious about them.

Here's one for you. 1894 Winchester chambered in .38-55. Made in 1910. It has a 24" half octagon barrel and a "button" magazine. My great-grandfather special ordered this gun brand new.

(Ignore the mint condition 1968 Buffalo Bill Commemorative Edition 1894 Winchester below it )

Those are sweet. I swear, of I had money I'd have a room of just antique Winchester, Henry, Spencer's, Sharps, and the centerpiece would be my personal wild west unicorn, a Volcanic pistol. Drool....

I have a thing for old lever guns, 1911's and revolvers. I really like old Marlins to shoot and the Winchesters to look at. I still occasionally shoot that old .38-55. @Hayata has shot it too.

Great post, Nice collection.
I have been shooting Cowboy Action for about a year as work allows. Hope to see you there one day.

Id love to get into cowboy action....but I refuse to dress up like that.
That was off putting to me as well. Till I went and watched a match and met some of the local cowboys. They are the most welcoming and helpful bunch of shooters I have ever come across. My first few matches I was getting tips and pointers. Several had me try their guns and gave me ammo just to compare. If they can help you be more accurate and go faster even beating them in the competition, they will do it with a smile and warm congratulations.
You don't have to get all gussied up. Just a pair of cowboy boots and hat, Some Wrangler jeans and work shirt and you are good to go. There is no costume police. But once you are surrounded by all the cowboy gear you will start adding more to your own.
It's fun. The competition is surprisingly fierce. It will up your skills and quickness.

If I could go dressed normally,I might actually try it

If you want to see some one accurately work a lever gun about as fast as an AR, go watch a match.
10 on target (not the same target, you sweep typically 5 targets) shots in 2-5 seconds.

It's a '97.......typo on my part and I failed to proof read. Been corrected, thanks.

One of the best parts! The amount of money you can put into the clothes.......

My boots were handmade out of mulehide by a guy in AZ. An exact repro of a US Cavalry boot, except I had him use a low "walking" heel since I wouldn't be riding in them.

My chaps were handmade from buffalo hide by an Amish leather worker my Dad know.

My gun rig is a copy of the one that Johnny Ringo used in "Tombstone", but in a different color.

Hat is a "Tom Mix" by Stetson.

It's their sport so it's their rules. The what's and the wherefore's don't really make a difference.

Like the man said above, you don't have to get period correct. If you want to wear boots, Wranglers, a button-down shirt and a cheap cowboy hat, that's fine. There are Clothes Nazis there to police you up.

Just like IPSC/USPSA, IDPA, and 3-Gun have rules, so does CAS. The clothing is one of them.
