So I'm going to buy a lever gun to staisfy my inner posuer cowboy.

I want some nice, good looking, and functional....kinda like Marlins used to be.

I want a case hardened receiver....but don't care much which action.

I have two guns in mind, the Henry H010CC 45-70 and a Uberti 1873 in 45 Long colt.

Either one would be a toy....and I would reload for either caliber.

The Uberti is drop dead gorgeous...

The Henry looks good but my,main attraction to it is for the 45-70.

which should I get?

I eventually plan on getting a 45LC SAA.

Yeah, 45-70. Save the 45 Colt for the SAA.

I gotta disagree. I'd get the 45 colt. Share ammo. That's just me though. I like to keep it simple.

The other thing to consider is the load gate. The Uberti has a load gate (which I prefer personally) vs the Henry which you have to remove the tube at the end. Henry makes a great gun, and I will always have mine. But I've had to replace the rubber o ring that keeps tension on the loading tube a couple times and almost lost the tube itself because of that.

I do dislike the way the Henry loads....

Have you looked at any old lever actions? Maybe an 1886? The new ones are fine, but if you want something special that might be the way to go. You just can't replicate the look, feel, history, and craftsmanship of the older Winnies.

You can't argue with that either. Unless you want something you can tinker with and not feel bad about it. Or an older one is just out of budget.

Yeah those are about double what I want and am able to spend. My budget is a max of $900 or so...Id love a new Winchester but even those are out of my league

My first center fire rifle is a 70s model Winchester 30/30 given to me by my grandfather. Wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

It wasn't my first, but definitely on of my most cherished rifles is a 70s pre-safety Marlin 336 my old man gave me

I would vote for the .45LC since then you would have the companion piece once you had the pistol.

Actually, now that I think about your question, the proper answer is of course, "both".

I have a Uberti 1873 in 45 Long colt. The action was smoothed and short stroked by Cody. You can buy one from him already tuned for not much more denaro than the rifle costs new. The action on it is slicker than owl shit.

Man those are awesome...unfortunately about $600 out of my price range

I wish I could just do both....and eventually maybe I will.
