Remington 700 Mil Spec 5R 20" threaded. They are normally a tad over $1,000, but I see them on sale here and there for $950.

Every one I've ever seen shot under 1MOA out of the box. I've seen several that shot .5MOA - .75MOA with factory ammo and a trigger upgrade.

You're not going to find another bolt action rifle with better aftermarket support.

The Ruger Precision Rifle is another excellent choice. Costs a bit more than the Rem700 I described, but once the Rem700 is upgraded with features comparable to the Ruger, it'll cost you quite a bit more.

Thanks for the info. Gives me some reading material.

I'd probably start with a Remington 700. Police or Sendero model. The RPR's are great for the price. One thing nice about the RPR over the 700, quick and easy barrel change for different calibers. RPR is too heavy to hunt with IMHO, and unlike the 700, there is no way around it.

I know you said 308, but take a good look at 6.5 creedmoor as a cartridge. Match ammo is "cheap," ballistics are superior to 308 for long range if you decide to get into it, and it's not a barrel burner like other 6mm variants are. It is a necked down 308 cartridge, so will be fine with your can.

The most fun-to-shoot rifle that I have was made in Remington's Custom Shop. It's a 40-XBR benchrest rifle that I had made for me in about 1970. It's chambered for .222 Remington, has a 20" stainless barrel that's 1" diameter at the muzzle, a 3-0unce trigger that's never failed me, and is topped with a 1970-era 20X Unertl scope that slides in the spring-loaded mount. I have shot lots of 5-shot groups under 3/8" center-to-center at a hundred yards and quite a few under 1/4". One target I still have has a 0.160" group on it. Admittedly, this is a very old-school benchrest rifle but it's still a ball to shoot.

My suggestion is to look at what the Remington Custom Shop can do for you. The 40X series rifles are really a great platform and they still make them. The 40X series are based on the Remington 700 family of rifles but they are WAY better than the production 700 series rifles (which definitely aren't bad themselves). Information I've read is that the Model 7oo platform was used for a sniper rifle by the US Army back in the 'Nam era.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a modification of the .30TC case, which was based on the .300 Savage.

The .308 necked down to 6.5mm is the .260 Remington.
Glad to learn. I had it stuck in my mind that it was a necked down and trimmed 308 cartridge. Obviously, I'm not a reloader.

Personally enjoy the Ruger M77 series bolt guns!

Have a couple in 308 and one in 22lr and one in 17hmr! .22lr is nice with suppressor!

I've got a custom Rem700 .308 for sale that is super nice with a low round count. It's 22" and non-threaded, but that's easy to remedy.

Item Description:

Work done by Jeff Walker of Walker Custom Rifles

Rem700 SA RH action, trued/blueprinted

Scope mount holes opened to 8-40.

Badger Ord bolt knob and bolt body spiral fluted

Oversized BO recoil lug

22" Shilen barrel, #7 contour, 1:10" twist

Jewell straight trigger, adjustable. Currently set at 2lbs.

Badger Ordnance 20MOA Picatinny rail

CDI Precision DBM bottom metal, takes AICS mags. No mags included.

All metal Cerakoted in FDE.

Stock is a modified HS Precision.
-LOP shortened to 13.25"
-Weighted
-Texture coated and camo'ed
-Karsten kydex adjustable cheekpiece
(If you'd prefer, I'll swap the stock to an unweighted, unshortened, black/green HSP stock, with Karsten adjustable cheekpiece and standard bottom metal).

Few brass ding marks on the right side of the receiver, behind the ejection port. Normal on a Rem700.

One slight blemish on the end of the outside edge barrel in the Cerakote. Probably banged against something. Not near the crown and it's so minor I can't get a picture of it with my iPhone.

SCOPE & BIPOD NOT INCLUDED AT THIS TIME.

Rifle belongs to a student of mine who has given me full power to sell the rifle and make deals.

With M118LR ammo this rifle was repeatable on steel at 1238yds, shot at Legion OTG. Solid .5MOA or better at 100yds with FGMM, USGI M118LR, and SSA M118LR.

Round count is definitely under 500rds. I'm waiting on the data book to get an exact number.
