The #'s don't get run through nics, that'd be through the local police. NICS just checks the buyer.

Call them and check. I have before and they were very helpful.

Who was helpful, the local police? I've always heard that they won't run a number unless they see the gun in person because if it comes up stolen they have to keep it.

Perhaps I have the abbreviation wrong; I was referencing the system used by law enforcement to run the firearm serial numbers to see if it was reported in any crimes.
