Hi Point makes some El Cheapo firearms. The kind of stuff a Po Boy would buy. Someone who wanted to buy a gun but couldn't afford to get a S&W, Colt or a Ruger. So for about $200. you can buy a Hi Point 45 Caliber Semi-automatic. The sort of thing a college kid or someone on a low budget would look at. It's also real Macho looking.
They're square cut, heavy, know to be rather inaccurate but some folks swear they last, while others swear at them. Hardly know as a range gun, they tend to nest in glove boxes, in closets or a dresser drawer. Hi Point will give you a life time warranty, if you are the original consumer. Originally back in 1987 they were being made by Haskell MFG Lima Ohio. In 1993 Hi Point changed their markings to read Hi Point Firearms. This one is marked as a Haskell so it was made before that happened. Sn 0370XX. I'll have to give them a call tomorrow.
It's 7 3/4 inches long, built like a brick, weights a ton and ugly as sin but.... I like it. If you wanted to depict a military type, leading a band of insurgent humans in a war against some killer machines, you stick one in his holster. He'd be peering out over the field, with a scarred face and a Haskall 45 in his holster. For about 15 seconds, in Terminator 2, Judgement Day, as Sarah Connor describes the war, there stands a grown up John Connor with a Haskell 45 on his hip. You got to look quick or you'll miss it.
Anyway today I ran into this one for under $70. and bought a box of Blazer 45 Auto 230 Grain, FMJ to run through it. It's in fair shape and has seen some rough miles. But as a curio item it's an amusing addition to the collection. Better than sticks and stones but not a serious piece. Unless you're on the wrong end of it.
