Favorite deer hunting rifle/caliber

I've had a 270 and a 30-06 but I'm thinking I'm going to try to use my ar with 223 this year and see how it goes.
Should be in the shotgun forum...but Iowa is shotgun only for deer. So this is my son's deer rifle.
We call it Frankengun. We build it for 1 weekend of hunting. It starts with one of my old 870 express 12 ga. receivers, then add a 24" Mossberg rifled, ported, cantilevered slug barrel (for sabots). A 3-9x40 scope, a Choate +2 mag extension, and a sling. Add some synthetic furniture so he doesn't ruin the wood stuff in the weather and briars, and he's good to go.
He's taken quite a few deer and put a couple of nice buck mounts on the wall with it.
When it comes back to me after the hunt, it's cleaned and put back to a clay shooter with the wood.........870's are fun.
