What's the latest consensus on the best BCGs? Nitride better than NiB? NP3 better than nitride? Does it matter? Is NiB mostly for looks? Learn me

i like the bcm milspec bolt carriers. my current go-to has a bcm bolt in a vdi lifecoat carrier (integrated gas key). seems like one less thing to go wrong but i’ve never had the gas key come loose on either of my bcm carriers.

i have a nib bcg too (cant remember the brand) and it’s worked fine although i don’t have an extensive round count on it yet. that one is a range gun.

I’ve mostly used SOLGW nitrided BCG’s with zero issues. Recently I decided to try a coated bolt carrier just for shits n’ grins. Bought a Sionics NP3-coated. I’ve owned a lot of NP3 coated firearms and firearms parts over the years and have been very pleased with it.

My carbine was 100% reliable before I swapped the BCG out for a coated one; it’s still just as reliable. When I cycle the bolt by hand, it feels smoother. So far, biggest plus for me has been how much easier it is to clean over the nitrided bolt.

I just bought a toolcraft bcg, seems to be pretty decent. I've had NiB and they were easier to clean, but I didn't notice many other differences.

I'm lucky to put 500 rounds a year on an AR carbine. That said, I've had no issues with the plain jane carriers/bolts I've used. Mostly Spike's factory BCGs and a couple of PSA premium BCGs. Haven't had any issues yet.

I've always liked the idea of the treated/coated surface. I just haven't tried one yet.
