AR lubrication: thin film of oil or dripping wet?

The only lube that matters is that which is in contact with steel.

I use more lube than most folks. Grease and oil.

Have the BCG dripping like a SanFrancisco bath house, then put it on a candle warmer and let most of the oil either absorb or drip off.

I assumed this was for hot weather... If its around 0 degrees the TM says to use LAW. That's when I do use just a thin coat. If it hot like it is now, I take a old fashion shaving brush to coat my BCG & CH, and the lower trigger group where it looks wet. It will run hard all day, and at the end of the day, all you have to do is wipe down the BCG, then re-oil the BCG and your ready for tomorrow.

I've always had better luck with a soaking wet BCG personally. Never had a malfunction with it soaked, but I have with a thin film.

Drop of oil in the cam pin hole, drop around the bolt/carrier interface, light wipe on the locking lugs, drop on the extractor area... And if I'm feeling randy, maybe a little drip in the firing pin hole.

Trigger group gets soaked and turned upside down to dry a bit, BCG gets drenched and one shake to clear excess.

When i put together the m16 and went to shoot it, I had completely forgot to lube it. Basic Palmetto state crap, on an anderson lower. Bone dry, it rand through a handful of mags with zero problems. After that, I wiped the BCG with a silicon wipe, and it has still had no problems. No need to soak it down IMO.

I used Hoppe's Gun Grease years ago on slide rails and other places- in 10/22's around the bolt even.

Well, after taking one of those seldom shot pistols and a seldom shot 10/22 out of the safe... the slide stuck back and the 10/22 bolt stuck back. The Hoppe's gun grease had turned into dark brown bubble gum. All the solvent had evaporated out of the grease and it because super sticky.

Just my experience- I only use oil now.

I just use the standard CLP and have never had a stoppage due to lack of lube. But then again, I've never run one much past 600 rounds without relubing (and usually cleaning too).

I've had good results with hornady one shot too but it doesn't seem to cycle as smoothly.

Other than Frog Lube, I'll use any firearms or automotive lubricant, grease or oil. My favorite is the home brew oil I mix up, and Mobil 1 synthetic automotive grease.

I keep froglube around for my Marine friends. It's non-toxic so I don't have to worry about them going full on window licker

Seriously though, I've got a barely used jar of FL that I tried about 2 yrs back.....meh would be generous, unless you like your weapon to smell like @Laufen

You're not a real Marine if you don't drink CLP and use Cosmoline for mustache wax.
