I can't say for sure if it was originally a DOE specific design, but I do know they used it to slow them down. I just think it's a crazy cool piece of history. Especially me working in the power industry.

Almost as quick as a DOE.... Fun fact! They were actually too fast to be effective originally! So there designed a special hydraulic buffer to work in conjunction with the recoil spring to slow the rate of fire.

True disipators were short lived. They all struggled with gas issues. Most disipators now are mid or carbine length gas systems with a non-functional (Gas wise) FSB In the rifle length position for that very reason.
