Let's talk SBR legality here for a minute

If you have a stamp for an SBR and the stamp says caliber "9" what does this mean in regards to requirement of the caliber of rifle, as well as requirement of having it set up for any caliber at all?

I am over my AR9 and don't ever shoot it thanks to this new 22lr one that is lightyears more fun and cheaper to shoot, but the AR9 lower is stamped as an SBR. I would prefer run my 22lr setup on this lower, and sell off the AR9 as a pistol package. Am I required to have a "9", not that that is really even a caliber, upper on this gun? Furthermore, are you required to have anything. Couldn't my lower just be stripped entirely and unused...?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having the SBR lower used in a non-sbr configuration(or not used at all, i.e. stripped) I also don’t believe the caliber markings matter. Just keep in mind that I’m no lawyer, but I am an expert at giving free Internet forum legal advice.

Well the 22 is also under 16" so it would be in SBR configuration, if that matters.

No. You can pin whatever upper you want to your sbr lower.

I've heard before something along the lines about having to own an upper for the registered caliber or some weird shit like that, which doesn't quite make any sense...

No, it doesn’t. So if you’re at the range with your sbr lower with a .22 upper on it and the atf shows up and asks you where your 9mm upper is and wants to ride to your house to see it, just drive them to my house instead...

I used to, but I got tired of getting caught. Pretty sure the penalty for an illegal SBR is a tad stiffer than $175 ticket.

They would like you to. If it was an mp5 or something that takes a gunsmith to change the barrel, I would notify them. For an AR? I wouldnt worry about it.

There's no such thing as a "permanent change" to an AR lower when it comes to barrel length or caliber.

Just has to be able to be put back in the configuration that you sent the Form 1 or 4 off in. Keep the upper in your safe and you are good to go.

An SBR'd 22 is the shit. Love mine. Brings a giggle to anyone who shoots it.
