In Path of Exile 2, you need a total of three Cowardly Fate fragments to form the complete Cowardly Fate key. These fragments are earned by successfully completing the Trial of Chaos—a challenging 10-round gauntlet of combat and survival trials. Specifically, Cowardly Fate fragments drop from defeating Uxmal, the Beastlord, the boss encountered in the final round of the trial.
Collecting all three fragments is essential because the fully assembled Cowardly Fate, along with two other fate keys—Deadly Fate and Victorious Fate—are required to unlock the door leading to the Trialmaster fight. The Trialmaster is one of the hardest bosses in POE 2, unlocking significant content such as advanced ascendancy points and high-level rewards.
Once you have all three Cowardly Fate fragments, they automatically combine into the full Cowardly Fate. You can then place this fate, along with the other two, in the Trialmaster’s tower door to gain access to the boss encounter.
It is important to note that once a fate fragment is placed into the door, it cannot be removed. So players should ensure they have all three before committing them. However, the fragments are tradeable, allowing players to purchase what they need from the currency exchange if farming proves difficult.
The key takeaway is that three Cowardly Fate fragments are needed to form the full key. This key, combined with the other two fates, is what opens the door for one of POE 2’s ultimate challenges. Efficient farming and fragment collection are vital steps in progressing through the endgame Trials of Chaos.
