I just got my stamp back and now I need an upper. I am going to have a can on it but I don't know what caliber I should go with to start and am looking for suggestions on lbarrel length and caliber.

You'd better get your ass in gear. We're at some serious lows price wise right now and everyone seems to be searching for a bottom before buying. That's a classic scenario that results in a rapid increase in prices....and we know it's coming.

Personally, if I were building one I'd grab a 10.5" 5.56 upper.

@NWS or @PewPewPewCo could answer this.

But when you submit the papers for a SBR don't you have to list the barrel length/ caliber and are supposed to have the set up you listed available?

Yeah, good point. You should always have that upper ready and available that will put the rifle into the condition to which it was registered.

If cheap, Karri's Guns, JSE Surplus, watch PSA's daily deals.
For quality, buy from big name manufacturers and be prepared to pay retail.

Primary Arms has a few uppers on sale right now too.

Barrel lengths... if it's .223/5.56, I wouldn't go shorter than 10.5".

.300BLK was developed for an 8" barrel if I'm not mistaken? Someone chime in and correct me on that one.

Given the cost of ammo, I'm a fan of .223/5.56 for an upper. Assuming you don't reload- Reloading is about the only way to shoot .300BLK cost effectively.

Nothing wrong with 7.62X39- that round packs a hell of a thump. But if I were going to shoot it, I'd have to go with an AK. That is the rifle that was designed to shoot that caliber.
Yerp, purpose built designs have a special place in my heart.

I have 10.5", 11.5, and 12.5" 5.56 SBRs. I like the 12.5" the most.

I guess I'll open this can of worms.... the dimensions of .223 and 5.56 are identical. The only difference in the rounds is a slightly higher operating pressure for the 5.56. I'll have to check the book later today, but I think that the difference is like 3 or 4 percent.

eh it all matters what your trying to shoot, you can get the frangible 300blk for around .40 a round which isn't great but not as bad as a lot of other things, good ammo does get pricey though

same here.

i own all of these uppers but my 12.5 (actually i think it's a 12) is the best shooting.

the 11.5 is a clone so it's nice too.
