"Benefits" is one thing you ain't getting from me. Just like my grandaddy always said, the benefit I offer is that you basically set your own salary, make a lot of money and pay for your own damn health insurance. Hell nowadays you don't even have to worry about that since Obama is gonna pay for it.

Paid vacation and holiday is about the extent of my benefits package. I can throw in a virtually unlimited supply of Cracker Jack as well. I do find it increasingly difficult to compete for candidates with bigger companies who can afford to pay for health insurance, match 401k and provide "personal days" for when you need to just retreat to your safe space after hearing some harsh words. Although, money now ranks as number 6 on the list of things that motivate employees(I think Forbes recently placed money as #10 motivator). People today are more concerned with security and comfort than they are with opportunity and growth.
lol, those bigger companies cant afford that stuff, thats why they pass the buck on to the consumer at every turn hahaha

i really want to own my own business and what not but seeing how many things i would need to comply with it really is a turn off. i figure for employees it should be as simple as

"these are the terms, when you come in you get paid for this. do you agree? ohh and if you want a raise, make yourself better and ask"

Benefits must be where it's at for most people. I can't figure out in this pea brain where the fuck the jobs are that allow people to take summers and Christmas vacation off to be with their filthy kids.

Well...safety and security blankets are important. I guess I don't have room to talk...I could go to Saudi Arabia next week and have a job making over $250k working on jets...but fuck Saudi Arabia

I too want to be my own boss...but for anything that would require employees it's just too much of a dick ache. After seeing what my in laws have to go through just to open an ice cream and bakery shop with no employees outside the family I have to wonder how anyone does it today.

Working with family, for family, or having family working for you makes things exponentially more difficult. Generally you have more people expecting bigger pieces of the pie. Go to Brusters and tell me how much those kids are getting paid. There's a reason for that. A family member is going to make $50k a year to do the same job you could hire a kid to do for $8-$10hr.

Well I do wish you luck in that. Any highly seditious materials that I can provide are available for the asking.

Yep, I'm the cheapest in the industry and there are certain things I just can't do if I want to remain that way.

i really want to own my own business and what not but seeing how many things i would need to comply with it really is a turn off.
If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Most people like the idea of controlling their own fate, but when faced with the prospect that no one is going to write them a check if they don't put the money in the bank their thinking seems to change.

i figure for employees it should be as simple as

"these are the terms, when you come in you get paid for this. do you agree? ohh and if you want a raise, make yourself better and ask"
It's never simple dealing with employees. #1 motivator for employees today is "working for a competent supervisor". Money brings people in, it will give people a boost from time to time, but it will only keep them there for a short time. You have to be a goddamn psychiatrist to figure out how to get people to work nowadays.

Which brings up another point. I pay people to do all the work around here. I just show up and make sure everyone is doing what they're supposed to be doing, peruse SET and order shit from Amazon. What do you guys do for a living where someone pays you to be on here all day?

Keep your family and business completely separated
Money and blood don't mix like 2 dicks and no bitch
Find yourself in serious shit

Not with this family....but yes overall you're right.
Right now it's my sister in laws only hope. She's kind of the epitome of what's wrong with america. She's 28,has a degree in theater, and has been single for years, recently lost a job working at a show store because she wanted some crazy schedule to accommodate her theater performances (that she doesn't get paid for) at some local theater. She could go get a decent job as at least a theater/drama teacher but says she doesn't want to work that many hours. ...her only choice is to work at the ice cream shop making $10/hour

Which she will only do until something better comes along, then she will leave her family in the lurch faster than you can bat an eye.

I've seen these situations before. The kid you hire making $8hr. has more potential to one day take over operations than most family members will. If you look at the number of kids who work for their father vs. the number of kids who successfully take over for the father, the prcentage is extraordinarily low.

I worked for my dad for years, been out on my own a couple times before finally becoming successful independent of him. Went out at 22 and ended up falling flat on my face. I did well financially, but after about 5 years and a few stupid mistakes I was burned out and broke. Went back to work for dad for a while and was finally able to understand all the things he beat into my head as a kid. One of them is that you have to work ON your business not IN your business. I'll never forget that. I know people struggling in business who don't get that. I have a friend who has a really nice automotive repair shop but insists on doing all the wrench work himself. He thinks 1) If you want it done right you have to do it yourself and 2) He can't afford to hire a mechanic. It's a vicious cycle which I got stuck in at 22-25 years old that ultimately cost me just about everything.

The second thing I learned from working for my dad is that I never want to work for another person as long as I live. And I never will. I know that now. There's serious freedom that.

Well I'm pretty much done. My wife makes enough for us and I have a 401k. There may be an inheritance down the road but I'm not counting on it. I'm enjoying working for somebody else now and complaining about how they run things. It gives me something to bitch about besides my own shortcomings.

Engineering HVAC building systems design. Two monitors helps...plus I'm usually either swamped or got nothing to do.

That's another thing about working for yourself. When something doesn't go right, it's all you. If you fail, it's all you. There's no one else to blame and that can be a tough pill to swallow. Although, that doesn't stop people from blaming the economy, the employees, the customer base and anything else they can think of. Hell, I heard a guy say business was slow because the fair was in town.
"You can make money or you can make excuses, but you can't make both."
