short barrel Rifle - need help setting up

I am currently wanting to build a SBR. Someone please school me on how to set one up legally. As in what forms and how to fill these forms out. Do I need a trust? I couldn't find a existing thread but if there is one I would appreciate the link

You don't NEED a trust! But it allows you to let someone else to have possession of it without you present. As long as they are legal to have possession!

I could go the individual route too right?

You don't have to have a trust- you can file as an individual (but trusts do have their advantages). These days, along with the Form 1, you're going to need to have fingerprint cards done by your local law enforcement (The Probate Court here sends you to the LEC (jail) to get the cards done). I think it's a $30 fee.

And you have to have photos- passport type pictures. USPS or Walgreens/CVS can do those I believe.

And all that gets sent off with a $200 check for the actual stamp. Then you wait for months and months until the stamp comes back... then you pay to get your lower receiver (if it's an AR pattern rifle) engraved with the trust name and city/state. There are several places that will do engraving (ship it to them and wait) in the $80 to $110 price range (for engraving alone).

Then, with the engraved lower in hand and the tax stamp in hand, you can assemble your SBR upper and newly taxed/engraved lower.

So I do it individually, what information is engraved onto the lower? Since I wouldn't have a trust name?

The maker, city and state- so your name, if I'm not mistaken.

I would say if you plan to add anything else under NFA rules then get a trust. It's easy to add items and amendments to add trustees if you want later. Dobbs deal for engraving and filing is hard to beat for SBRs. Another thing set up the AR as a pistol now and run it hard to make sure nothing's wrong before you spend the $ to find out lower is outta spec.

If you're not familiar, the host is a lawyer who is running to get on the NRA board and does these specific videos explaining the legal language used in the firearms world.

Definitely get a trust set up. You only have to do it once and then you can you use it for any NFA item. The NFA game is not a cheap one. Do it "correctly" from the start.
