I am heavily considering a bolt gun purchase. It will be my first ever bolt gun and would like to see what everybody else looks for in a good bolt gun. Let's get ready to rumble.

I'm going to get a Tikka T3 Tactical in .308. Great trigger, Sako barrels, solid actions, MOA or better guaranteed for under 1K, and a decent stock, and threaded barrel. The actions are much smoother than Savage, and gasp.......I've just never been big on Savage aesthetics.Every Tikka I've owned has been a demon at distance.
So Tikka is first on the block.
Do they feel pretty well balanced?
Is there a place I could go that night have one I can fondle?

Yeah, they do. If there's a downside it's that magazines are expensive (I don't care, only need a few), and they aren't "lego like" like the Remington 700. They aren't out there in the quantity so there aren't a million and one stock and trigger options for them like the 700. I don't care though, they come set up really well from the factory, and they just plain shoot.
I'm sure lots of folks will be along with other suggestions, and there isn't really a bad choice. I just like them. They're quality, and they feel and shoot like it. Not everyone and their dog has one (not that it's too important) but I prefer something just outside of the mainstream offerings.
Adventure outdoors probably has some in stock.

I'm looking hard at the IA Deception, but I haven't decided. I'll sure let you know though. This project is probably a couple months away.

I'll second what @Laufen said about the Tikka T3. I have a T3 Varmit in .22-250.
Glass smooth action- I mean, Wow. Very decent out of the box trigger. Comes with a detachable magazine and extras are like $60 and hold four rounds. But here again, I'll agree with Laufen. I don't need more than a couple rounds. I also like the stock- the fore end is particularly comfortable to hold.
All that said, I'd have to describe myself as a Rem 700 guy if I had to pick just one. That's probably because Dad was a hard core Rem 700 guy. I have several 700s- good rifles for the money.
And since I saw the IA Deception mentioned- I'll second that choice too. Mine is great- and has no noticeable POI shift... that impressed me.

I always like the savage line and the 110 is a great first bolt and they have a decent aftermarket following if you like to mod your guns and don't want to go with the typical Remington 700 aka the Honda of the gun world.
So on the tikka rifles do they all have threaded barrels? From what I can see there are no exact details.

I think the Sporter, the Tac and the Compact tactical are the only ones that come threaded. Don't quote me on that though.
