Interesting research from Duke University.

There were 310 million guns in the U.S. in 2009 (a Congressional Research Service figure have no reason to dispute), a figure that likely grew to perhaps 350 million by 2013. These guns result in 33,000 deaths in 2013, of which 64% were suicides, leaving 500 accidental deaths and 11,200 due to homicides.

There were 269 million registered vehicles in the U.S. in 2013. These result in 33,000 deaths a year, roughly half of which are drivers (these are official NHTSA statistics).

Thats very surprising to me actually. By owning a gun I don't feel that I put my life in danger any more than not owning a gun. The opposite actually. Thats one of the reasons I own a gun. For safety. By owning and driving a car I understand there is a risk there. Owning a car is only 1.8 times more risky than owning a gun? Kinda scary if you think about all the people you may know that have been in car accidents

There were as many gun deaths as highway deaths?

I'm sure it goes without saying, but I know a lot more people that have been in auto accidents than people who have been in gun accidents.

And furthermore, we can remove the word "accidents"... I know a lot more people that have been hurt by vehicles than people who have been hurt by guns. And yet no one has a problem with vehicles- those are "necessary" to the USA's way of life.

Unless the issue is drunk driving or texting while driving then most vehicular deaths are not newsworthy. Firearms related crimes are more likely to be newsworthy most of the time.

Factor the suicides out and the number is better.

I don't consider suicide a "risk." Those people obviously have made a decision and removed "risk" from the equation. From that point, it is only a question of method.

Sweet, but let's stop using the anti-gun term "gun deaths".
