All ya really need is a 25 caliber pistol for bear anyway. Just have to shoot your buddy in the kneecap so you can outrun him.

40 S&W = .41 mag shorts!
10mm = .41 mag longs!

They don't make it yet. My perfect camp gun is a Keltec Sub2000 style carbine that shoots 10mm and takes Glock 29 mags... Fold it in half and stick it in your jacket, and will take down pretty much anything on this continent... A full grown Bison might give you some trouble, but hard cast lead rounds and head shots should do the trick...

44 magnum skips off bear skulls, unless it is a solid bronze bullet. Do not see why 10mm would be any different.

Probably depends on the angle you hit it at, which I assume applies to most handgun cartridges...

I picked 10mm, because that round and that magazine would work in both my carry gun and the carbine, making it more versatile. A 700ft/lbs+ round out of a pistol should pick up a decent boost in both power and accuracy when shot from a 16" carbine, no?

The game wardens in Iceland or Greenland, I forget which... carry 10mm pistols in case they run into a polar bear...

I do not know about warden, but 10mm semiautos are not carried much in Alaska.
44 magnum and up in cross draw or shoulder rigs, Buffolo Bore bronze solids. 12 ga with Brenneke slugs, if not hiking much. That's what I have used and seen.

As far as skull angle, bears have very sloped and thick sculls, so it is very hard to get a 90 degree penetrating head shot on a charging bear. COM mag dumps are more effective with anything less than 44 magnum.
