Sad story but it really reinforces the fact that folks should they decide to carry really need to get out spend the money on ammunition and practice practice practice! And by that I don't just mean getting out to the range and poking holes in paper from a non defensive position at 15 feet, you gotta know how to draw from a holster, you gotta be able to move around while doing this while not only maintaining control of your target but also firing point of aim with minimal use of sights, and of course this all must be done using the highest degree of safety! , I'm a firm proponent of conceal carry but the reality is that the sidearm is only as good as the individual controlling the tool and without proper and frequent practice it's just way to easy to have a level of confidence that outweighs your skills.

Don't be a statistic folks, get out and reinforce the skills that you've learned, spend the extra couple of dollars and shoot your carry ammunition, see how it chambers, the recoil when using it, and make every round count while doing this.

It's a sobering article but really lends to the necessity of keeping our skills sharp if God forbid the need were to arise..

Use of a firearm is your last option, which is why situational awareness is so important. Being alert and well trained will help give you every advantage to avoid a life threatening situation, or the additional time to prepare for the need to use lethal force. Finally, trust your instincts. If the situation appears unusual, causing the hair on the back of your neck to stand up or an uneasy gut feeling, LISTEN to yourself to take action to avoid the situation all together, if possible.

Agreed 100% SA is huge and without it you really shouldn't be carrying to begin with!

Well stated!
