One of my youth group kids shipped off to Army Basic Training yesterday. He's been texting us pictures on his phone of his quarters. He is allowed to have his personal phone and can text and post to social media.

When did this start???

Kinder, gentler basic. They probably have a designated safe space also.

He's still at reception. They'll take his phone when he goes to his training unit, likely in 3-4 days.

They get them on Sundays now. Wont matter much. Tradoc locks em down and treats them like they are 13 year old girls. The next day with no formations will be the day after they sign out from AIT.

The only breaks we got on Sundays is if we pretended to want to go to mass.

I've heard that some drill sergeants start a FB page for family and friends to follow the class' progress but I've never seen a new recruit show up for basic and send pics of their barracks.

My buddy who went through 2 years ago said they had them in reception, then they were locked up when they hit their training units and they got them on Sundays at first, then full weekends, then we're allowed to just keep them after returning from FTX.

Give it a few days and the posts will stop. Reception is a whole different game from BCT, they just care about getting everyone processed, and it'd be a logistical pain in the ass to collect all the phones for the < 1 week most kids will be there.

Looks like he's having fun. His Mom already received the "I'm so sorry for everything I ever did bad" letter.

I want to send him a legit care package. What would be good for basic? He's got 4 more weeks.

I know my biggest issues in basic were dry skin and a runny nose. You should send him a box full of lotion and tissues.

That would go well with a list of positive reinforcement phrases that would endear him to the drill sgts.

I don't remember any women being in basic training with me...
And we had to line up and wait for a pay phone to call home.
We walked everywhere with a stupid helmet liner and a rucksack, and our weapons.

Care packages in Basic? I never got a care package in basic! No womens, either. They trained in their own groups. And I swear there was razor wire, claymores, and MG nests between our barracks and theirs...

Oh, to be that young again...
